February is Black History Month, and there are numerous events going on throughout the month in order to celebrate. Here are a select few:

Each week in the month of February, The Current (radio station 89.3 FM) will feature an iconic African American artist both on air and on their website. The Current will play songs from the featured artist throughout each week, as well as discuss his/her music and life on The Current’s blog http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/music_blog/. O’Shaughnessy Theater

On February 12th at the O’Shaughnessy Theaters in St. Paul, Singers Accord will collaborate with J.D. Steel and Mac Phail Community Choir for a concert benefiting the Shangri-La Foundation USA. The benefit is to help build a child resource center, as well as residences for homeless children, in Nairobi, Kenya. General admission tickets are $25, however you can purchase premium seating tickets for $50. Students only need to pay $15.50. Visit www.singersinaccord.org for more information.

Basilica of Saint Mary

On Friday, February 17th, Minneapolis Community and Technical College is partnering with the Basilica to host Spirit and Soul, a community event intended to honor the many achievements of Americans from African descent. The main event will spoken word, music, and dance acts. Those performing include Jerry Steele, Lundstrum Center for Performing Arts, the MCTC Jazz Ensemble, Papa Diop and more. The Minnesota History Center

To celebrate Black History Month, the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul is presenting African Americans in Aviation: Then and Now on February 29th. The panel discussion will offer personal aviation stories from a Tuskegee Airman to Northwest Airlines’ first African American pilot. The event will take place from 1 to 2:30 PM, and will be free.
