The world is about to witness the pre-Broadway world premiere of Purple Rain: The Musical, and it’s happening right here in Minneapolis. This isn’t just another musical opening; it’s a hometown celebration of Prince’s legacy, the Minneapolis Sound, and a love letter to where it all began.

Based on Prince’s legendary 1984 film, Purple Rain follows The Kid, a young musician navigating love, rivalry, and redemption in the Minneapolis club scene. The production features a book by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, direction by Lileana Blain-Cruz, and music supervision by Jason Michael Webb — plus the guidance of Prince’s longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes.
This musical reimagines the energy, heart, and style that made the original film a cultural phenomenon, all while honoring the spirit of Prince and his incredible impact on music and art.
Dates, Venue, and the Big News
The show will take over the State Theatre in Minneapolis starting October 16, 2025, originally scheduled to run through November 16. But due to overwhelming demand, an additional week has been added — extending the run through November 23, 2025.
That means more time to see this once-in-a-lifetime event before it heads to Broadway. Preview performances begin mid-October, and the official opening night is set for November 5, 2025.
Meet the Cast and Creative Team
Leading the cast is Kris Kollins as The Kid — a performer discovered through his soulful Prince covers online. Joining him is Rachel Webb as Apollonia, known from the national tour of & Juliet. The ensemble includes a mix of powerhouse voices and rising stars, many with ties to the Twin Cities music scene.
Behind the curtain, a top-tier creative team brings Purple Rain to life. With a Tony-nominated playwright, acclaimed director, and authentic Prince collaborators on board, the musical promises to deliver both nostalgia and fresh energy to the stage.
