People for Parks, an organization on a mission to improve Minneapolis and its parks, is hosting the Falls 4 All Wine and Food Pairing Fundraiser to help raise money to build a universal access playground at Minneahaha Falls Wabun Picnic Area. This will be the first universal playground in the Minneapolis Park system, and will be a space where both children and adults with any kind of disability will be able to use at least 70% of the playground equipment. And, as a universal playground, the space will not lose its appeal to those children who are fortunate enough to be able-bodied.

The playground will include wheelchair-accessible surfacing that will be soft enough to cushion a fall, multiple entry and exit points to increase access to the play equipment, additional connections within the playground structure to allow children in wheelchairs to move through the playground more smoothly and with more options of where to go, and playground equipment designed to provide additional physical support. The structure will also have large ramps and platforms on its more elevated parts, allowing disabled children the power to look down and across the playground like other children, instead of up at it.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board has generously presented $300,000 towards the project, but since the cost of accessible playground equipment is generally much more expensive than the cost of non-specialized equipment, People for Parks would ideally like to raise $1 million.

The Falls 4 All Wine and Food Pairing Fundraiser will be hosted at Sea Salt Eatery, located on 4825 Minnehaha Ave. in Minneapolis, on Friday, November 4th. The event begins at 7:00 PM and will last until approximately 10:00 PM. There is a $50 donation required per person, but after that, the food and wine is complimentary!

While sipping on some great wine and munching on the delicious food donated from Cap’s, Edelweiss Bakery, Lone Spur Grill, and Carmen, you will have the option of bidding in the silent auction that will also be taking place during the fundraiser.

So, head on over to Sea Salt Eatery on November 4th and help out with this great cause! This is an occasion to help give all children, both able-bodied and disabled, the opportunity to take pleasure in the simple art of play.
