Chances are a lot of us have brothers and sisters of our own, and probably have had an older sibling or someone who was a role model to us. Big Brother Big Sister of the Greater Twin Cities is an organization that can provide that kind of support for young people who weren’t so lucky.

Big Brother Big Sister is the oldest volunteer organization in the Twin Cities. Founded in 1920, Big Brother Big Sister has been providing role models, mentors, and friends to underprivileged kids metro-wide for 90 years. Nationally, it’s even older. It was originally founded in New York City in 1904 when a young law clerk named Ernest Coulter sought men to befriend the boys he saw coming through the court system.

BBBS matches young people with adult volunteer mentors to build long-term, one-to-one relationships. The relationships built through this program can have a real lasting positive effect that kids will benefit from for years to come, possibly a lifetime. Volunteer mentors provide friendship, emotional support and hope to young people.

Besides providing a Big Brother or Big Sister, the program can also provide opportunities for school and event partnership, philanthropic support, and education and enrichment as well.

BBBS this year has launched the new Young Professionals Group, which was created to expand awareness for the agency’s programs, recruit volunteer mentors and raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
