Day 265: Improv Classes at HUGE Improv Theater

Published on: 01/31/11 9:41 PM

It’s been said that acting classes are beneficial for a number of different reasons. First, learning how to act helps us access our emotions. It can also teach us to be more adaptable in different situations.

One of the biggest benefits of learning how to act is that it can be a lot of fun.

If you made a new year’s resolution to try something new or adventurous this year, why not try acting classes? HUGE Imrpov Theater in South Minneapolis makes enrollment a snap and offers different levels of acting classes depending upon your experience level.

Improv, short for improvisation, is a type of acting in which the actors either have no script or a basic script with no strict dialog. In a sense, the actor makes up words and actions as he or she goes along.

HUGE Improv Theater offers Improv 101, an introduction to the basics of improvisational acting. It covers such topics as trust, agreement, give and take, and basic scenes with fun guidance from Huge Theater Artistic Director Nels Lennes. Improv 101 meets Sundays 11am to 1:30pm.

For a bit different experience, Improv 201 is offered Tuesdays from 7 to 9:30pm. Led by Jill Bernard, the class covers character creation, using Jill’s VAPAPO toolkit, giving participants the ability to create strong, compelling characters that they can hang onto through the whole scene. The session focuses on Voice, Attitude or Posture, and Animal, Prop or Obsession (VAPAPO) to build instant characters. You will use these tools to initiate scenes, create relationships and find agreement. Also covered are patterns, games, and basic edits as tools for scenework.

Each class is $200 for 10 weeks of sessions.

Another option is Improv Drop-in, also led by Jill Bernard, Wednesdays from 5 to 7pm. This is an ongoing investigation of improvisational scenework. All experience levels are welcome, except absolute beginners. Cost is $10 per session, pay as you go. Classes are currently in session, but keep checking the website for info on when the next term of sessions begins for Improv 101 and 201.
